Muskie
fishing in Minnesota is growing in popularity. According to DNR
statistics only one percent of Minnesota anglers were fishing
for Muskies twenty five years ago. By 2007, that number grew to
about 14%. “Improvements in the quality and quantity of Muskie
angling opportunities are the main reason for the growth”,
according to Dirk Peterson, Central Region Fisheries Manager for
the DNR. “Muskies, Inc., the organizer of this tournament, has
been a significant contributor to those improvements and their
efforts to recruit new anglers and pass on the legacy of fishing
are greatly appreciated,” Peterson added.
Muskies, Inc., a non-profit organization, is widely recognized
as the first organized group of sports anglers to practice and
promote “Catch and Release” fishing. Since 1966 the organization
has also worked with the DNR to improve Muskie fishery and
support conservation practices through financial contributions,
educational efforts and volunteer labor. Funds from Muskie Mania
2008 will be used to address fisheries improvement, Muskie
research and youth outreach.
Fully inclusive Contestant Packages for the tournament are $95
for adults, $30 for children ages 17 and under, and $150 for a
Family Pack that includes Mom, Dad and two juniors within the
same family. Ron Schara, host of KARE-11’s “Minnesota Bound”,
WCCO Radio and award-winning columnist for the Star Tribune, is
the Honorary Grand Marshall and MC for the 2008 tournament.
Early entrants will receive a free copy of Schara’s book
Minnesota Bound in addition to the standard contestant package,
which includes free nightly food, marked lake maps, discount
coupons, entry into the “Magic Muskie” competition (for members
